2 Year Old Program

This is, for many children, their first experience in a school setting, during a time in their lives of rapid and dynamic growth.  We offer one classroom with three teachers who honor this year of growth and are skilled and adept in navigating the major transitions of the 2 year old. Each day they create a diverse evironment for children to explore, engage and learn with all of their faculties.  We change materials frequently and maintain a low child to teacher ratio throughout the day.

Our program focuses on autonomy, socialization, development of a healthy self-concept, and inspiring a love of learning for all chidren.  Learning to complete tasks, communicate needs, and take care of their own needs is central to the 2 year old's development, and we support their budding independence by offering appropriate challenges in creative ways.  Our teachers work with you and your child to notice signs of readiness for potty training.  Because we focus intently on all areas emotionally related to potty learning and socialization, and work with families through the processes, by the end of the school year most children are using the toilet and have at least one good friend.

Before school begins, we offer a summer workshop for new families to talk about what to expect and how to smooth the transition to school for both child and parent.  We believe in building trust with families, honoring children's feelings, and providing consistent, simple routines.  Visiting days, where parents and children visit the school together, help to ease the transition as well.  At any time, parents can observe their children through peepholes into the classroom or call the school for updates.

The outdoor space for this classroom is separated from the big yard for the first few months, to allow for close connections and careful supervision.  Our teachers like to "hear every conversation."  To eventually transition to the big yard, the children visit in small groups with increasing frequency.
